rOtring rOyalty

Classics like the rOtring 500 or 800 are staples in a mechanical pencil enthusiast's collection. But the icon status of rOtring had to begin somewhere, right?

According to their website, rOtring begins with the birth of the Bauhaus School of Art and Design. The Bauhaus was also the beginning of the "learn by doing" motto, which many colleges design their curriculum around today. At the Bauhaus School, technical excellence and design aesthetics bridged together to form some of the most important contributions to design today. The type of minimal, simplistic aesthetic heavily influenced rOtring's design.

In 1988, the multipen reached the market as customized multi-functional writing instrument. The rOtring Multipen technology enabled the choice of a pen or pencil point by selecting an icon. This brings us to our first pen: the rOtring Quattro

The Quattro is a vintage rOtring multipen with the options: black pen, red pen, 0.5 mechanical pencil, or highlighter. The highlighter has dried out, but both the pens still work and the pencil will always work with lead. I'm sure there are refills for the pen ink, but I haven't investigated that yet.

Next on the list is the rOtring Lava Ballpoint. An iconic part of any rOtring collection, the Lava is truly unique it its textured finish.

Last, the rOtring Lambda Ballpoint. The Lambda is definitely unique in the sense that it does not follow the typical rOtring design... no red ring, no hexagonal body, and knurling in different places that usual.

Not the best photo, but you can definitely see the different locations of the knurling.
